Pneumask is a reusable full-face snorkel mask PPE.

Our mission for Pneumask is to provide as much clinical validation as possible on this alternative PPE solution. We have tested a number of prototypes along with our collaborators and have shared those results as an open document, so that others implementing similar solutions can also benefit from those findings. We are also working with the FDA to get Pneumask fully approved as an N95-equivalent PPE. Our goal for this project is to engage as many communities as possible to help implement Pneumasks both within the U.S. as well as internationally.

What is Pneumask?

Pneumask is a kit of parts consisting of an off-the-shelf snorkeling mask, a custom (3D-printed) adapter, and a filter/filter cartridge. The primary benefit of a snorkeling mask is providing a full-face shield and air seal while allowing for controlled intake and exhaust flows through the mask. Such masks are already widely available in large quantities and tapping into their supply chain would allow their production to be quickly ramped up during the COVID-19 crisis.

How Does It Work?

Although there are various models available in the market, each model commonly has a ventilation port consisting of 1 inhale and 2 exhale channels, located at the top of the mask. The breathing circuit filter (i.e. viral filter), typically used in anesthesia procedures, can be attached to this port via a custom adapter, therefore filtering the incoming air into the mask. One end of this adapter that interfaces with the mask will slightly vary with the different brands/make of the mask.  In most models, there is an additional exhale port toward the mouth/chin area, which can be blocked by either inverting or permanently blocking it, when it’s used in a sterile environment.

Pneumask Configurations

Below are a few of the possible configurations of Pneumask. Please take note of the pros and cons for each configuration prior to implementation.

Pneumask-G / single filter at ventilation port, chin-valve operable)

Pros: Simple implementation, effective filtration

Cons: Slightly muffled voice, non-sterile

Pneumask-G

Pneumask-G1 / double industrial filters at ventilation port, chin-valve operable

Pros: Alternate supply chain for filters, simple implementation

Cons: Slightly muffled voice, non-sterile

Pneumask-G1

Pneumask-S / single filter at ventilation port, separate inhale/exhale channels in adapter, chin-valve blocked

Pros: Can be used when a sterile field is required, uses only one filter

Cons: Added effort on implementation, muffled voice, minimal CO2 buildup

Pneumask-S

Pneumask-S1 (covered) / single filter at ventilation port, chin-valve operable and covered with surgical mask

Pros: Simple implementation, effective filtration, reduced back transmission, should be able to use when a sterile field is required

Cons: Muffled voice, moderate CO2 buildup (can be tolerated for short periods of time and can be reduced with periodic deep exhalations), requires additional surgical mask

Pneumask-S1

Pneumask-S2 (blocked) / single filter at ventilation port, chin-valve blocked

Pros: Can be used when a sterile field is required, only uses one filter

Cons: Added effort on implementation, muffled voice, moderate CO2 buildup (can be tolerated for short periods of time and can be reduced with periodic deep exhalations), fogging, accumulation of water condensation in the mouth chamber, reduced breathability

Pneumask-S2

Pneumask-S3 (filtered) / single filter at ventilation port, second filter at chin-valve

Pros: Can be used when a sterile field is required, no issue with voice, no CO2 build-up

Cons: Requires a second filter, some disassembly of the valve, and different materials to be all configured into one assembly

Pneumask-S3

Pneumask w/ glasses
any of the above configuration with glasses assembled inside the mask (either using tape, suction cup, go-pro adapter, or alternatively, coated magnet)

Pros: Added visibility for those who wear glasses

“There is a tremendous need for reusable masks in my community. The hospitals and other large groups have PPE and are able to absorb the elevated prices, but smaller practices like mine which help cover emergent and urgent injuries are left struggling to find and pay for PPE. In addition, if and when the peak of COVID cases arrives in our community having this back up plan when PPE will be in short supply at the hospitals will be critical.”

— Dr. Roberto Miki, MD (Miami, FL)

“As a clinical anesthesiologist who also works in intensive care, aerosols are an everyday hazard. For us PPE is critical and there is not enough for everyone. In this crisis, Pneumask can be a real game changer for all of us.”

— Dr Cristián Muñiz Herrera, MD (Chile)

“We are designing, validating, and supporting the deployment of N95 mask alternatives to hospitals and front line health care workers around our state. The Pneumask concept is particularly valuable in hot spots like Detroit and rural hospitals where PPE shortages may be especially acute and there is absolutely no margin for error with staff safety.”
